Despite not being cutting-edge, I also feel the gfx in GW are generally nothing short of gorgeous. I am constantly taking screenshots. This is a combination of a solid engine, great art direction and just being impressed by how they can crank out these visuals and still make the game scalable for older systems.

Nightfall's gfx quality will increase, making the game look even better for players with the hardware but probably keeping it accessible for people with lower hardware. The way it should be

still i dunno how ppl with 56k connections lived through the update before the NF preview.
Graphics are client-side on your machine, they aren't being sent real-time over your connection. Higher graphics just mean an initially longer time to download the files, but once on your hard drive, they aren't related to connection speed.

Yikes!

Just think of where the game would be if they use those.

totaly agree on this, also they should add more "fire breath" like effects to the dragon bosses..i still remember wen i saw glint for the first time i was like "holy crap, that thing will spit fire" then i saw that tiny fireball coming out of her mouth .

I agree Guildwars graphics are good as they are, But it does not do justice to the concept art imo lol. I saw their concept art at conceptart.org or whatever and it was just... Breath taking

People running shit computers would be at a disadvantage.

Just as an ice-breaker, I've been a professional character modeler for years now. Worked on little games like Unreal Tournament 2004, etc., etc. (If you're a fan of Xan, feel free to Paypal me lots of money! >_>)

There are two completely separate components of "good graphics". The first is the technical side, which seems to be what most of the posters here are caring/talking about.

Technically, GW is good, but not fantastic. I recently played a demo of City of Heroes, and while I'll keep my overall opinion of that game to myself, the nice bump and spec mapping on the characters really brings them to life.

The second component is artistry. This is where otherwise fantastic games like Oblivion fall short. This is why despite what I said in the previous paragraph, I adore GW's characters, and am only slightly amused by CoH.

I'd venture to say that artistically, GW is the best PC game on the market at the moment, and is definitely the most beautiful MMORPG, hands-down. It's hard to take a screenshot that isn't worthy of framing.

Technical flash is nice, and to an extent, necessary, but normal maps and HDR lighting won't make your game beautiful. That takes artists.

Sure, I'd love some flashier spell effects, too, but my hat's off to the GW art team.

I wouldn't mind, so long as it was offered as an option and not forced on everyone. I'd hate to load up GW one day to find out my computer, which barely squeaks by on the recommended specs, can no longer run GW at a playable framerate. Especially considering all the money I've sunk into the game.
